Glass & Lights Glasgow

Windscreen, window & headlight repair & replacement

About Our Glass & Lights Service

Your vehicle's glazing and lighting systems are safety-critical components that must be maintained in full functional order at all times. A chipped or cracked windscreen compromises your forward vision and, more importantly, weakens the structural contribution the windscreen makes to the vehicle's roof in a rollover scenario. Damaged or non-functional headlights, tail lights, and indicators create a genuine road safety risk and are a specific MOT failure point. At Motorono, our glass and lights service covers the complete range of glazing and lighting repair and replacement needs for Glasgow drivers, delivered to the standards required by DVSA MOT testing and all major UK motor insurers. Windscreen chip repair is one of the most time-sensitive services we offer. A small chip in the windscreen can develop into a crack within days, particularly in Scotland's climate where rapid temperature changes cause the glass to expand and contract. Once a chip develops into a crack, the windscreen typically requires full replacement rather than repair, which is significantly more expensive. Bringing a chipped windscreen to Motorono for repair before it cracks is always the faster, cheaper, and more environmentally responsible option. Our resin injection chip repair takes approximately 30 minutes and, in most cases, is covered completely free of charge under comprehensive motor insurance with no excess applied. Alongside windscreen services, we carry out replacement of all other vehicle glazing - side windows, rear windscreens, and sunroof glass - and repair or replacement of all lighting components including headlight units, tail light assemblies, indicator units, fog lights, and the increasingly complex LED and OLED lighting systems found on modern premium vehicles.

The DVSA's MOT testing standards are explicit about glazing and lighting requirements. A windscreen crack that falls within the driver's swept area (the area cleared by the wipers in front of the driver) of more than 10mm in length is an automatic MOT failure. Any crack of more than 40mm anywhere on the windscreen is also a failure point. Non-functioning headlights, tail lights, stop lights, indicators, and hazard warning lights are all immediate MOT failure points. Beyond the MOT, driving with damaged glazing or non-functional lights is an offence under the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations and can result in a fixed penalty notice and points on your driving licence. More critically, the safety consequences of driving with a compromised windscreen or inadequate lighting in Glasgow's often dark and wet conditions are significant. Professional, prompt repair of any glazing or lighting defect is the only responsible course of action.

Our Glass & Lights Process

01
Damage Assessment
We assess the chip or crack location, size, and type to determine whether repair or replacement is required. For windscreens, the criteria include the size of the damage, its proximity to the driver's primary vision zone, and whether the inner layer of the laminated glass has been penetrated. For lights, we assess whether the lens alone has failed or whether the entire unit requires replacement.
02
Chip Repair (Where Applicable)
For chips that meet the criteria for repair, we inject specialist UV-cured optical resin under vacuum into the chip cavity. The resin fills the void completely, restoring the structural integrity of the glass and minimising the visual appearance of the damage. The repair typically takes 30 minutes and the result is a significant visual improvement, though a faint mark at the repair site is usually still visible.
03
Windscreen Replacement
Where replacement is required, the new windscreen is a direct OEM or approved equivalent unit sourced for your specific vehicle. Adhesive windscreen bonding is carried out using Sika or equivalent approved polyurethane adhesive systems, following the manufacturer's minimum drive-away time requirements. ADAS camera systems integrated into the windscreen are recalibrated after replacement.
04
Side and Rear Glass Replacement
Side window and rear windscreen replacements use direct-fit glass sourced for the vehicle's specific make, model, and specification. Bonded glass is replaced using approved adhesive systems. Heated rear windscreen connections are tested after replacement. Privacy glass specifications are matched where applicable.
05
Light Unit Assessment and Replacement
Failed lighting components are assessed to determine whether the bulb, LED module, ballast, or entire unit has failed. Where components are replaceable, we source the correct specification replacement. Where complete unit replacement is required, OEM or approved aftermarket units are sourced. All replacement lights are tested for function before the vehicle is returned.
06
ADAS Recalibration (Where Required)
Modern windscreens increasingly house ADAS camera systems for lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. After windscreen replacement, these cameras require recalibration using manufacturer-specific tools. We carry out static and dynamic calibration as required by the vehicle manufacturer's specification.

Why Choose Motorono for Glass & Lights?

Free Chip Repair in Most Cases
Most comprehensive motor insurance policies cover windscreen chip repair with no excess, meaning the repair costs you nothing out of pocket and does not affect your no-claims discount. We manage the insurer authorisation instantly while you wait.
OEM and Approved Glass
All replacement windscreens and glass we fit are either genuine OEM units or BS-approved direct equivalent glass that meets the same optical and structural standards as the original. We do not fit substandard glass that may fail optical quality checks.
ADAS Calibration Included
We include ADAS camera recalibration in our windscreen replacement service for all vehicles that require it. Many cheaper windscreen replacement services overlook this step, leaving the ADAS systems incorrectly calibrated and potentially dangerous.
All Light Types Covered
From simple bulb replacements to complex Xenon HID, LED matrix, and OLED unit replacements, our team has the diagnostic tools and technical knowledge to handle the full range of modern automotive lighting systems.
Same-Day Service for Chips and Bulbs
Windscreen chip repair and bulb replacements are typically completed on the same day, usually within an hour. We aim to eliminate MOT failure risks and safety issues as quickly as possible.
Insurance Managed
We manage all windscreen and glass claims directly with your insurer, handling the authorisation process while you wait in our comfortable customer area. The entire administrative process takes minutes and we aim to begin the repair or replacement immediately after authorisation.

Insurance & Claims

Glass repair and replacement is covered under virtually all comprehensive motor insurance policies in the UK. Most policies specifically cover windscreen chip repair with zero excess and no impact on the no-claims bonus. Windscreen replacement is typically covered with an excess of between £75 and £150 depending on your policy. Side window and rear windscreen replacement following theft, attempted theft, or accident damage is also covered under comprehensive policies. At Motorono, we are authorised to work directly with all major glass claims insurers including Autoglass, Belron, and the in-house glass teams at Aviva, Admiral, and AXA. We handle the authorisation process completely, and in most cases you will not need to pay anything upfront. Contact us on 0141-4045222 or simply bring your vehicle in and we will manage everything from there.

Glass & Lights in Glasgow

Glasgow's road surface conditions are among the most challenging in the UK for windscreen chip damage. The city's arterial routes - the A77 through Shawlands, the A8 along the Clyde, the M74 and M8 motorways - all carry heavy truck and bus traffic that throws up road debris and loose aggregate at high velocity. Scotland's pot-holed secondary roads in the East End and Lanarkshire are particularly notorious for creating the chipping events that damage windscreens. The City Centre's stone-paved areas and tram tracks create different but equally damaging impact risks. Our workshop at 40 Forth St, G41 2SS, is ideally positioned to serve Southside, Govan, and Ibrox drivers who need fast, professional glass repair. West End and City Centre customers also find us conveniently accessible via the A77 and M74 junction network.

Common Questions

How big can a chip be before it requires full windscreen replacement?

Current UK guidance and MOT standards allow chip repair for chips up to approximately 10mm in the driver's primary vision zone and up to 40mm outside this zone, provided the damage is to the outer layer of the laminated glass only. Chips with long radial cracks extending from them, or any damage to the inner laminated layer, require full windscreen replacement. Our technician will assess your specific chip and advise accordingly.

Will the chip repair be invisible after treatment?

Resin injection chip repair significantly improves the appearance of the chip and prevents it from spreading, but it very rarely produces a completely invisible result. A faint mark at the repair site is usually still visible under certain lighting conditions. The repair is primarily about structural restoration and crack prevention rather than cosmetic perfection. If an invisible result is required, windscreen replacement is the only option.

Can you repair fogged or yellowed headlight lenses?

Yes. UV-yellowed and fogged polycarbonate headlight lenses can often be restored to near-new clarity using our headlight restoration process, which involves progressive wet sanding and polishing followed by UV-protective lacquer application. This is significantly cheaper than full headlight unit replacement and produces a remarkable visual improvement, particularly for older vehicles where new units are expensive or difficult to source.
